Aloe Vera

Aloe leaves contain a clear gel that is often used as a topical ointment. Aloes are propagated by removing the offsets which are produced around the base of mature plants, when they are a couple inches tall (or larger). Columbus carried it on board his ships during his ocean voyages.
Aloe Vera is a semi-tropical plant which looks more like a cactus and a member .

Aloe vera's use can be traced back 6,000 years to early Egyptian civilization, where the plant was depicted on stone carvings.
The use of aloe vera can be traced all the way back to the ancient Egyptians. All Aloes are semitropical succulent plants, and may only be grown outdoors in areas where there is no chance of freezing (USDA zones 10-11). However, they make excellent house plants when they are given sufficient light. Because Aloe plants consist of 95% water, they are extremely frost tender.
